So, why was Voldemort out to kill harry? It all started with a simple prophecy. It was all down to a small white crystal ball containing Harry's past, present and future. It was that crystal ball that led to Harry's parent's deaths, his constant suffering, and ultimately the death of The Dark Lord. Let's zoom back to Harry's divination lessons and back to the woman who made it all happen, Professor Trelawney.
The Order of the Phoenix - The Lost Prophecy
In the Order of the Phoenix, after Sirius's death, Dumbledore explains everything to harry. It all started when Dumbledore started to appoint Trelawney as a new divination teacher a year before Harry was born. Sybill Trelawney had an interview with Dumbledore in the Hog's Head pub. He asked her to say a prophecy that she knew of. Out of her mouth came a mystic voice saying,
'the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches....born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies.... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not.... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...'
The boy that she was referring to could have been either Harry or Neville because they both fit the same criteria. Severus Snape had overheard the beginning of the prophecy when he was a death eater and ran to tell Voldemort, little did he know that Voldy planned to kill Lily, Snape's love. Ever since, Voldemort has been on the hunt to kill the one who would destroy him.
That was the one important thing that wasn't mentioned in the films. Still love them though. Hope you film lovers understand now!
